History of Christ the King High School

90 years ago, in 1933, a vision was conceived, and a foundation was laid, not merely in bricks and mortar but in the ideals of education, resilience and community, when the Antigua Convent School of Christ the King opened its doors with the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, led by Sr. John Mary. At this time, the school was co-educational starting from kindergarten to school leaving certificate level.

In 1958, with the advent of the Christian Brothers who started a new Catholic educational institute, the boys of the upper classes were transferred to the St. Joseph’s Academy, leaving co-educational from kindergarten to grade 5 and the female population from forms 1 to 5. Later, in 1963, Convent School moved to new buildings on Old Parham Road, which is its current location, and was renamed the Christ the King High School.

The administration and faculty of Christ the King High School comprised mainly international members of the religious order, the I.C.M. and the academic school year 1988-1989 saw the last I.C.M sister in the person of Sr. Claina Letang as Principal. In September 1989, the leadership of the school transitioned with the appointment of its first lay principal, Mrs. Theodora Commodore. She served with distinction until her retirement in 2015, at which time Mrs. Patricia Collins assumed the principalship. In 2018, the role was entrusted to Mrs. Halima Zachariah, who continues to lead the institution.
